The Skilled Worker visa UK allows overseas professionals to live and work in the UK with an approved job offer from a licensed sponsor. It replaced the Tier 2 (General) visa and remains the most common route for skilled migration. If you have a job offer in healthcare, IT, engineering, or education, this visa could be your path to working and settling in the UK.
In this guide, we break down the application process step by step to help you get started with confidence.
Step 1: Check If You’re Eligible
To apply for a Skilled Worker visa, you must meet the following key criteria:
- Have a job offer from a UK employer with a sponsor licence
- The role must be on the list of eligible occupations
- You must earn a minimum salary (usually £26,200 or £10.75/hour, but this varies by role)
- Meet the English language requirement (Level B1 CEFR)
Step 2: Gather Your Required Documents
Before applying, make sure you have:
- Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from your employer
- Proof of English language proficiency
- Valid passport or travel ID
- Proof of salary and job title
- Bank statements showing maintenance funds (if required)
Additional documents may be needed for healthcare workers or jobs with shortage occupation codes.
Step 3: Apply Online
You can apply online through the official UK Government website. You’ll need to:
- Pay the application fee (£719–£1,500 depending on length)
- Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (£1,035/year)
- Book a biometrics appointment if applying from outside the UK
Processing times are typically 3–8 weeks depending on whether you’re applying from inside or outside the UK.
Step 4: After You Apply
Once granted, your Skilled Worker visa can last up to 5 years and can be extended. After 5 years, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). You can also bring dependents with you under certain conditions.
